Hail to the Kings!

Considering the name of this blog, it’s nice to be able to celebrate some bone fide business heroes with this morning’s post.

Some of the contributors to the Business Heroes blog already know about our Customer Kings campaign, as they were recognised as winners in last year’s contest (congratulations again Clive and Gillian!). For those who don’t, Customer Kings is – quite simply – a hunt for the UK’s most customer focused businesses.

We first launched Customer Kings back in 2009, with Real Business magazine (whose former editor now graces this very site). The concept behind the campaign is very simple, but equally true; a tougher economy makes it more difficult for small business owners to control a lot of what happens to their company, but the experience they offer their customers is one of the absolute fundamentals that they can always keep a grip on. Those that do are worthy of the title of Customer Kings.

Even though it’s only been 12 months since that initial campaign, it feels like the UK is a very different place indeed. We’re out of recession, and there’s a wave of optimism flowing through the small business economy . At the same time, the principle of Customer Kings remains the same – keep your customer close and reap the rewards.

So, without further ado, please put your hands together for this year’s “Winner of Winners”, Green Energy UK!

You can find the rest of our winners and highly commended companies below – and read all about their achievements at both Real Business and our pages at the Cisco site – but Green Energy are undoubtedly deserving of a special mention here at Business Heroes.

That’s because the real business heroes are the ones who are willing to do something different when it comes to raising the bar for their company. And that’s just what founder Douglas Stewart did with Green Energy. While lots of businesses say that they run for their customers, few can claim to be run by them as well – Green Energy can, because the first 100,000 customers to sign up for its eco-friendly energy will also receive 400 shares in the company.

That’s the kind of innovation and brilliance that Customer Kings was established to single out for praise. Each and every one of our winners this year has gone the extra mile to build a relationship with their customers that will stand the test of time. And for that, they’re not just Customer Kings, they’re business heroes too.
